Torquay Proposal Story

Proposal December 25th 2011, Married in May ’13.

“I always said to my now wife that I would never propose to her on a ‘big engagement day’ like Christmas Eve or Day, New Years Eve, Valentine’s Day or any other close iterations. I done this because I knew deep down, from all the movies I’ve watched over the years, that this felt like the perfect collection of days to propose on. I also thought that by saying that I would never propose on these days, my now wife wouldn’t suspect the Big Question being popped when I did it.

I chose December 25th 2011, we had only been together a couple of years but as they say, the time felt right.

We always put our presents to each other under the tree a few days before Christmas so I knew that would be the best time to pounce! I asked for a pair of great cufflinks (I only had one shirt that I could use them on, but I needed something in a similar shape to an engagement ring box to set my plan in motion). The day she put my cufflinks under the tree, I waited until she left for work and then got to work myself… I cut up a box so it was an identical shape to the cufflinks my soon-to-be fiancé had bought me and then placed the engagement ring box into my handmade box and wrapped the ring in its new box with the same wrapping paper so that is looked a carbon-copy of the cufflink box (the hardest part to all this was the wrapping of the disguised engagement ring in wrapping paper, I had to make it look like my soon to be fiancé had wrapped the present and as everyone knows, women are far superior at wrapping presents! Men make it look like we wrapped it using mitten gloves!).

Then I made sure I got her a good Christmas present so that her attention would be focused on her just opened present rather than the excitement of me opening mine on Christmas morning.

On Christmas morning, we woke up, we went straight to the presents under the tree to which my soon-to-be fiancé said she wanted me to open my present first (I had just set up this whole thing and it was nearly all for naught!). After a little debate, she finally agreed to open her present first which was two tickets to stay in a posh London hotel for the weekend and tickets to the Lion King in the West End. This was a present she had always wanted. She was on cloud nine just staring at the tickets and A4 sheet of paper I had printed out telling her everything we could do on our weekend away, then as she wasn’t concentrating, I bent down on one knee. I grabbed her present to me from under the tree (which she thought were the cufflinks she had bought me, but was in actual fact her glistening engagement ring), then as she stopped staring at the tickets and slowly put the A4 paper down, I muttered a few words (I did have a long speech prepared but only gibberish came out) and the rest is history."
